being Christian

I’m so committed to having our church be a church where our number #1 outreach strategy and evangelism strategy is living Christian lives. That sounds pretty and all, but I wonder if it is a cop out to avoid the work necessary to invite others to follow Christ with us. I think it is a balance, I think it involves intentionality, and I think it actually involves planning. I struggle to understand it all. Any thoughts?

Hey Kev! I think you probably know where I stand. I think you hit the nail on the head. I think the extremes are those who think that "being a good Christian" is evangelism enough (I know that some will argue that being a good Christian necessarily includes evangelism, and I agree, but for the sake of the question I am disecting the Christian life into its component parts: Worship, Discipleship, Evangelism), and those that think evangelism is all that matters. I think both miss the target. Evangelism must be rooted in solid worship and discipleship. But it must go beyond just worship and discipleship. It must include intentionally evangelistic actions (that should naturally flow from healthy worship and discipleship). To be complete however, good worship must take into account both discipleship and evangelism, and discipleship must be rooted in the experience of and encourage the work of worship and evangelism. Anyway, I hope this clears the water more than it muddies it. Peace,

Eric
